3/3008 - Current - Systems Administrator -  Private

In my current role I help support 2 Data Centers that provide financial and data services.    The environments are diverse as are the clients.   Daily i help, troubleshoot Virtual Private Networks, DNS (bind), F5 LTM, F5 GTM and numerous other devices.   I am also a Unix System Administrator along with programming ability in Perl and PHP.  Performing this function I supported over 100 Linux/Solaris nodes running various versions with many services.  

 


7/2003 – 3/2008 - Sprint Nextel - Systems Integrator

As an individual contributor on the Sprint-Nextel National Platform Operations team it was my responsibility to maintain and support 3G data platforms.

  • Push To Talk platform – Took the initiative upon starting and built a complete end to end monitoring and trending solution. This package was resold by Sprint-Nextel to external carriers. This code also generated a patent request for tieing an originating request to a terminating request. This trending and monitoring solution saved Sprint-Nextel an estimated 2.4$ million dollars. The Push To Talk platform was based upon Intel servers with Redhat linux clustering utilizing SIP,VOIP, and RTP.
  • IFM – This platform enabled Push-To-Talk users to customize group lists and corporate group lists. Created customized monitors and trending solutions that was incorporated into the Push To Talk monitoring and trending solution. This platform was based upon BEA and Solaris 2.8.
  • F5 network appliance - Managed daily 64 F5 elements. While working on this platform I built a custom trending and configuration management interface. Developed and pushed a higher level policy to set standards so all Groups with in Operations were on the same backup, revision, and testing process.
  • Openwave Multimedia Gateway 5 – Building upon my success’s with the PTT and F5 platforms I was given the opportunity to stabilize and normalize a key 3rd party platform. Utilizing professional relationships was able to address approximately 40 deficient configuration issues. The direct result of these actions was that the platform for the first time was able to remain up and generate no outages during the holiday rush


8/2000 – 7/2003 - Hallmark.com - System Engineer

The Hallmark.com operations team is a 24/7 operation. The Site Operations staff is expected to be available via phone around the clock to work issues relating to applications, hardware, and operating systems. The environment is extremely fast paced and individuals must be able to work alone as well as with in a group. Normal day to day operations included the maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting of Solaris 2.6, Solaris 2.8, RedHat, and OpenBSD as well as software packages ranging from BroadVision, BEA, Netscape Enterprise Server, Veritas Netbackup, Altavista, Sendmail, LDAP, IMAP, POP3, and Apache. I have worked on many different projects As a Systems Administrator I performed many duties outside of the normal scope of a Systems Administrators role. Below is a brief list of some of those duties:

  • Technical Operations Web Portal – Using open source packages and my personal knowledge of PHP/MYSQL I implemented a web portal that kept track of and managed on-call schedules, downtime, shift reports, incident reports, technical documents.
  • Ticket Tracking System – Using open source packages implemented a well known ticket tracking system (RT www.fsck.com) to help manage issues and incidents but work flow and productivity
  • Gift Wish Resend Daemon – Using Perl I wrote a daemon that allowed our third party help desk to re-send customers gift certificates that may have got lost or sent to the wrong address by the consumer. Using security methods of IP access lists, Secure Socket Layers, and Authentication to protect sensitive data presented to the application.
  • Staging/Development infrastructure monitoring – Using the open source package Big Brother established a monitoring and trending resource for the staging and development environments of Hallmark.com and took over the role as subject matter expert of Big Brother monitoring in the production environment
  • RedHat Hallmark Server Build – Using my experience with RedHat and the Linux operating system mapped out, and setup process for all Linux servers going into the development, staging, and production environments to be the same build reducing the cost of support not only by data center smart hands time but in troubleshooting issues and problems.

5/1999 - 8/2000 - Contractor at Sprint - Senior Product Analyst, STI

     As a Senior Product Analyst in the IP messaging Group at Sprint, it was my role to provide technical expertise to the IP messaging Product Managers. Some but not all of my duties included: monitoring of industry for latest products, participating in a team to analyze products, develop solutions for small business mail needs. Hands on knowledge of the following products: Microsoft SQL 7.0, Microsoft IIS 4.0, Perl 5.05, WinPerl, Sendmail, Pop3, IMAP, LDAP, and Exchange 5.5


8/1997 - 5/1999 - Entex information Services - Network Engineer

 As a Network Engineer on the national team it was my responsibility to migrate NT servers from OS/2, migrate user desktops from OS/2 to NT workstation, and migrate MS Mail to Exchange. As a National Team member I worked out of my home and traveled extensively across the United States on deployments, which lasted form two days to 4 weeks.

Previously as a Network Engineer onsite for Tricon Global Restaurants Inc. (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell), I provided technical analysis for Tricon-Wichita's cc: Mail services, as well as coordinated with remote administrators to design and implement solutions to complex problems involving local and wide area electronic data communications. Fault tolerance and disaster recovery is accomplished by preventative router, server, and database administration-maintenance actions within the Ethernet and Token Ring networking environments; on Novell Intranetware 4.11 and Microsoft NT 4.0 platforms.

While supporting Entex corporate headquarters in Mason OH, I provided technical expertise in Entex's Local and Wide-Area-Network schema of 62 branch locations; consisting of over 5,000 personnel, nationally. Accomplished through the proper maintenance and troubleshooting of networking media. Performed installation / configuration of Novell NetWare 2.x-4.xx. Implemented and maintained Manage Wise 2.1, Electronic Software Distribution Server, 62 Netware Connect Servers, supported CODEX, Faxpress and Shiva Communications Server.
